Fluororesin, also known as fluorocarbon resin, refers to a synthetic polymer compound containing fluorine atoms on the carbon chain of the main chain or side chain. Fluorine resin can be processed into PFA particles (general PFA particles and engineering PFA particles), reinforced PFA particles (glass fiber reinforced plastic, etc.) and particles and other products. The particles made on the basis of fluorine resin are called fluorine resin particles, also known as fluorocarbon resin particles, referred to as fluorocarbon particles.
Since the discovery of polychlorotrifluoroethylene by Germany's Herst Company in 1934, especially the invention of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) by Dr. R.J.Plunkett of DuPont Company in the United States in 1938, fluororesin has won the favor of people and made great progress due to its excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, non-adhesion, weather resistance, low friction coefficient and excellent electrical properties. In 1964, DuPont commercialized polytetrafluoroethylene under the brand Teflon. Due to the most prominent corrosion resistance, PTFE quickly gained the reputation of "PFA particle king" and played an important role in the development of modern industry.
Internationally, there are three main varieties of particles developed from PFA particles. The first is the hot-melt fluorine particle Teflon series non-stick particles represented by DuPont Company of the United States, which is mainly used for non-stick pans, non-stick tableware and non-stick molds. The second is the building fluorine particle with polyvinylidene fluoride resin (PVDF) as the main component produced by Atto-Fina Company of the United States. It has super weather resistance and is mainly used for aluminum wall panels. The third is Lumiflon grade thermosetting fluorocarbon resin PFA,PFA is prepared by the copolymerization of chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) and alkenylethers, and its particles can be cured at room temperature and medium temperature. This room temperature curing fluorocarbon particles do not need to bake, can be in the construction and outdoor large objects on-site construction operation, thus greatly expanding the application range of PFA particles, mainly used for buildings, bridges, TV towers and other difficult to maintain large-scale structure decorative protection, with simple construction, good protection effect and long protection life and so on. After 1995, DuPont developed fluoroelastomers (fluororubbers) and later liquid (including waterborne) fluorocarbon elastomers, producing solvent-based and waterborne fluoroelastomer particles. So far, with different uses of thermoplastic, thermosetting and elastomer fluorocarbon resin particles, a full range of solvent-based, water-based, powder fluororesin particles are in development, broaden the fluorine resin particles should be and the field.
Fluorine resin particles in China is developed on the basis of drawing lessons from foreign advanced technology. Since the early 1990 s, the room temperature curing fluorocarbon resin particles produced by Japan Asahi Granule Resin Co., Ltd. were introduced and used in Shanghai highway and bridge projects. In the late 1990 s, it began to build factories in China. At present, the annual production capacity is estimated to reach about 12000 tons, which has been widely used in anti-corrosion, highways, railway bridges, transportation vehicles, ships and marine engineering facilities.
The reason why fluororesin has many unique and excellent properties is that fluororesin contains more C- F bonds. Fluorine is a chemical element with unique properties. In the periodic table of elements, its electronegativity is the strongest, its polarizability is the lowest, and its atomic radius is second only to hydrogen. The fluorine atom replaces the H on the C- H bond, and the C- F bond formed is extremely short, with the bond energy as high as 486KT/mol (the C- H bond energy is 413KJ/mol, and the C- C bond energy is 347KJ/mol). Therefore, the C- F bond is difficult to be destroyed by heat, light and chemical factors. F has large electronegativity, F atoms have more negative charges, adjacent F atoms repel each other, fluorine atoms on the fluorine-containing hydrocarbon chain are distributed in spiral shape along the jagged C- C chain, and the C- C main chain is surrounded by a series of negatively charged F atoms, forming a highly three-dimensional shielding and protecting the stability of C- C bonds.
